Any thoughts on this?

it looks like one more way to increase greenhouse gases and benefit the few without really creating anything.

There is no such thing as "bitcoin mining."  What is actually going on is buying and selling of virtual currency(bitcoin), for the purpose of turning a profit.  The term "mining" refers to digging into the ground, and removing minerals that are useful to people, and that can be sold in a marketplace.  So there is something physical that is being mined, such as iron ore, or natural gas, or limestone.  I am personally uneasy with the practice of currency trading, because it has the potential to alter the value of currency, and that can result in business failure, and the resulting loss of jobs.  One would think that having a stable currency would help keep the economy running, and help keep people employed.
